During 2013, with the inauguration of the new passenger pier at the Garibaldi wharf and the restructuring of the former customs house to receive passengers, the port of La Spezia has successfully welcomed 214,000 passengers aboard, representing an increase of 325 % compared to 2012. The timetable cruise season 2014, set by Port Authority plans to reach 185 calls for over 493,000 passengers, including more than 25,000 embarking and disembarking. La Spezia is the emerging Mediterranean port for Holidays cruise.
La Spezia is therefore now a new and efficient cruise hub: the city is a strategic starting point for easy access to cities like Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Parma, Mantua, Modena. Among the very close and beautiful destinations: the Cinque Terre, Lerici, Porto Venere, the marble quarries of Carrara, Lunigiana, the Val di Vara, Sarzana and the Magra valley.
The cruise industry will be further developed with the construction of a new waterfront, as provided for in the Port Master Plan, the project redesigns and rehabilitates 15 acres in front of the sea. A total investment of 300 million euro to build the new cruise terminal, a dock for yachts, commercial and residential areas, hotels, convention center, a sports center, a cultural center and restaurants.
