LA SPEZIA – TRAFFIC 2009
Container traffic had a 16% turning down: 1.046.063 teus were handled.
With 1.046.063 containers handled, the port of la Spezia shows a 16% decrease in 2009; a similar or even worse decrease was shown in the main ports in the Med and in Europe, because of the strong recession involving the world economy.
Anyway, the port of la Spezia attested its role as second national direct call port and as one of the most important ports of the Med.
Imported container were 526.685 teus, of which 342.955 full and 183.730 empty, while in export 519.378 teus were handled, of which 466.337 full and 53.041 empty.
Imported full container showed a 16.9% decrease, exported a 17.5%.
Totally, full container handled were 809.292 teus (- 17.3%), while empty were 236.771 (-11.6%).
Transhipment was 14.9% of the total traffic.
Asia is the most important foreign market served by the port of La Spezia with 43% of handling volumes, followed by America with 20%, Africa 19%, Europe 10% and Oceania 8%.
As regards inland markets, main regions served are Lombardia 28,2%, Emilia Romagna 25,5%, Tuscany 14,9%, Veneto 12,6 %, Liguria 8,6%, Piemonte 5,3% and others 4,9%.
La Spezia Container Terminal – LSCT (Contship Group) was among the first Italian operators of container terminals: in 2009 handled 851.558 teus (showing a 19% decrease), which is 80% of all container traffic of the port of la Spezia.
Terminal del Golfo (Tarros), working most of all in the Med, reached good results handling 140.800 teus, showing a very little decrease (11%).
Speter handled totally 53.705 containers.
RAIL TRAFFIC
In 2009, rail transport showed a considerable down turn: 219.000 teus were moved by rail, with a 27% decrease compared to 2008 (300.00 teus). The analysis shows that rail traffic of the port of La Spezia fell to 24%, with a worrying decline compared to past years. This is probably due also to different commercial policies of Trenitalia, with rising rates making the rail transport less convenient.
LIQUID BULKS
In 2009, liquid bulks handled were 1.926.871 tons, with a 23,2% decrease.
The economic crisis had repercussion on this sector as well.
In details, refined products showed a 31,2% decrease, while liquid gas showed a 11,2% decrease.
The operators working in this sector are GNL Italia for liquid gas (955.842 tons), Enel Produzione (449.000 tons) and Arcola Petrolifera (504.000 tons).
SOLID BULKS
A strong decline was showed by solid bulks as well, operated in the port of La Spezia by Speter, Enel Produzione, Monfer, Silos Granari and Rolcim: a total of 1.106.929 tons were handled, with a 34% decrease.
GENERAL CARGO
In 2009, international traffic had a considerable down turn, showing itself in general cargo as well: a total of 11.293.836 tons were handled, with a 21.7% decrease compared to 2008.
Containerised traffic were 10.716.458 tons.
TOTAL THROUGHPUT
Traffic of 2009 was of 14.327.636 tons (-23%). Containerised transport was 75% of total traffic.
PASSENGERS
In the port of La Spezia, passenger traffic showed a down turn: in 2009, only 31.000 passengers touched the port, with a 37.5% decrease compared to 2008.
