La Spezia - Traffic 2008

In December 2008, 99.085 containers (TEU) were handled in the port of La Spezia, for a total throughput in the whole year of 1.246.139 TEU, with a 5% increase on 2007.

Container traffic

In December 2008, 99.085 containers (TEU) were handled in the port of La Spezia, for a total throughput in the whole year of 1.246.139 TEU, with a 5% increase on 2007. Despite a curb on growth, which in the first six months had reached 8%, the port of La Spezia registered the highest container handling volume in its history.

 

Unloaded containers were 633.388 TEU, while loaded containers were 612.751 TEU.

The two main port operators touched both their traffic record: LSCT – La Spezia Container Terminal (Contship Italia Group) handled 1.051.805 TEU ( + 2,4%) and Terminal del Golfo (Tarros Group) handled 158.270 TEU (+ 16,8%).

CLP and Speter handled  together 36.064 TEU.

Trans-shipment was 16,4% of total traffic, compared to 19,6% in 2007.

 

Rail transport

In 2008, combined rail transport registered 300.321 TEU handled, compared to 302.000 of last year.

Transported tons were 3.182.697 (+6,1%), of which 2.995.098 tons were combined traffic (+ 3,2%) and 187.599 tons were conventional cargo.

Handled wagons showed a 3,2%  increase as well.

 

Liquid bulks

In 2008, 2.510.000 tons were handled in the port of La Spezia with a 19,8% decrease, mainly due to the drop of liquid gas importation at the GNL Italia Terminal (- 36,3%).

Arcola Petrolifera showed a 16% decrease as well (587.000 tons of refined products), while Enel terminal registered a 12% increase in fuel oil traffic.

 

Solid bulks

Handled tons were 1.678.000, with a 4,2% increase on 2007.

Particularly, coal traffic reached 1.268.000 tons (+ 7,2%), minerals handled were 175.000 tons (+64,6%), while other solid bulks and cereals traffic showed a 20,7% and a 94% decrease respectively.

 

General cargo

This sector showed a 1,7% decrease, with 14.431.000 tons handled.

 

Passenger traffic

In 2008, 50.000 passengers touched the port of La Spezia, with a 37,4% decrease compared to 2007.
